Anyone who decides to invest in SEO usually gets three quotes and can't compare any of them. One charges R$1,500 a month. Another asks for R$8,000. A third sends a fixed package with “50 keywords” and “200 backlinks.” The service has the same name. The work behind it almost never matches.

SEO is the set of adjustments that makes your site show up when someone searches for what you sell. In 2026, that also means showing up in AI answers on Google and ChatGPT. Below are the market price ranges, what pushes the cost up or down and what needs to be written into the proposal before you sign.

What SEO costs per month in Brazil

The most recent reference in Portuguese is the Hostinger survey of digital marketing prices, updated in January 2026. For agency SEO services, the range is R$1,500 to R$25,000 a month. Specialized consulting is billed by the hour, from R$200 to R$1,000.

The range is wide because it covers everything: the consultant who reviews page titles once a month and the team that restructures an e-commerce store with thousands of products. Hostinger doesn't break prices down by company size. It lists what drives the price up: industry competition, site size, technical complexity, business goals and the provider's experience.

What the Ahrefs survey shows about the market

To see how the market charges, the most cited source is Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO professionals, updated in August 2024. It's in dollars and was answered by people who sell the service, not those who buy it. Even so, it helps explain the logic behind the prices:

  • Retainers dominate: 78.2% of professionals charge monthly.
  • Average of $2,917 a month. The most common range, though, is much lower: $501 to $1,000, charged by 20.4% of respondents.
  • Who does the work changes the price: agencies average $3,209 a month and freelancers $1,348.
  • Experience matters: those with up to two years in the field charge $1,540 on average; those with five to ten years, $3,648.
  • By the hour, the average is $111.

Ahrefs itself notes that professionals in Central and South America are among those who charge the least. So the dollar figure doesn't work as a price in Brazil. It works as a ratio: freelancers charge less than half of what agencies do, and experience more than doubles the price.

What drives SEO pricing

1. How many competitors chase the same search

A physical therapy clinic in a Fortaleza neighborhood competes with a dozen rivals in search. An insurance broker that wants to show up across Brazil competes with major portals. The work to reach the first page scales with the competition, and so does the price.

2. Technical site health

A slow site, pages Google can't read, duplicate URLs, no mobile version. If your site has these problems, the first month of SEO turns into repairs. Many companies pay a retainer for months without knowing the problem was in the foundation. We cover the most common causes in why your company's website doesn't show up on Google.

3. Who writes the content

It's the item that weighs the most and the one most often missing from the proposal. SEO without new content is fine-tuning pages that already exist. If the provider writes the pages and articles, someone has to understand your business, your customer and the questions they ask before buying. That's hours of work, every month.

4. Site size

A ten-page service site and a store with five thousand products call for different work. More pages mean more structure, more points of technical failure and more content to maintain.

5. Showing up in AI answers

Today, some searchers get a ready-made answer before they see any links. Showing up in those answers takes pages with direct answers, structured data and sourced information. We wrote about it in how to get your company to show up on ChatGPT and Google. An SEO proposal in 2026 that doesn't address this is only looking at half of search.

Retainer or project: which to choose

Not all SEO has to be monthly. You can split the work in two:

  • Project (pay once): technical audit, speed fixes, page structure, structured data, mobile version, Search Console setup. It has a beginning, middle and end.
  • Ongoing (pay monthly): new content, adjustments based on the data, tracking of rankings and competitors.

If the site is poorly built, paying a retainer before the project is filling a leaky bucket. In many cases, the cheapest path is to rebuild the foundation once and only then keep up a steady content pace.

Promises that should raise red flags

Google keeps an official page, Do you need an SEO?, updated in June 2026, with guidance for anyone hiring. The core line is blunt: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” The same page warns against:

  • Guaranteed rankings or claims of a “special relationship” with Google.
  • Link schemes and submitting your site to thousands of search engines.
  • Unsolicited emails offering SEO.
  • Tools that claim to be approved by Google. Google doesn't approve third-party tools.
  • Lack of transparency. Google reminds you that you are responsible for whatever the provider does on your site. Misleading content published in your name can get the site removed from the index.

Packages sold by volume, like “200 backlinks a month,” belong on this list. Links bought in bulk are exactly the kind of practice Google's spam policies penalize.

What the proposal must include

Before comparing the final price, check whether each quote answers:

  • What gets done in the first month and what gets done after.
  • Who writes the content and how many pages or articles are included each month.
  • Whether it includes technical fixes on the site or just recommendations in a report.
  • How results are measured: leads and sales from search, not just keyword rankings.
  • What report you get and how often.
  • Whether it covers visibility in AI answers.
  • Whose name holds Search Console, Analytics and site access.
  • The minimum contract term and what happens if you leave.

It also pays to have a realistic timeline in mind before signing. We cover that in how long it takes for a site to show up on Google.

How we do it at the Studio

We don't have a price list. The fixed price is set after discovery, once we understand what you sell, to whom and who competes for the same search. The deadline is written into the contract.

For us, the foundation comes first: the site has to load fast, be readable by Google and AI, and clearly answer what customers ask before buying. We use Figma and Claude Code for design and build. Domain, code, files and access stay in the client's name, including Search Console. I've been a Product Designer for over ten years, and the Studio has launched more than 600 projects since 2014, in 13 countries.

If you want your company to reach people already searching for what you sell, on Google and in AI answers, bring your site in for a discovery with the Studio's SEO and GEO service.

Common questions

How much should a small business spend on SEO monthly?

In Brazil, the entry range starts around R$1,500 a month, according to Hostinger. The right amount depends on how many competitors chase the same searches in your city or industry, and how much your site needs fixing before it can grow.

Can I pay for SEO once, with no retainer?

You can pay for the technical work as a project: audit, fixes and site structure. What takes consistency is content and tracking results, because competitors and search engines change every month.

How long does SEO take to show results?

There is no guaranteed timeline. Google itself advises asking the professional what results they expect and how soon, and being wary of anyone who guarantees the top spot. A new site usually takes longer than an older site with a track record.

Is SEO still worth it with AI answers on Google and ChatGPT?

Yes, but the scope has changed. AI answers draw on pages published on the web, so a well-structured site with clear answers and sourced data serves both. Ask for the quote to include visibility in AI answers.
